I was so excited to get the phone call that Shay was in labor, I was shaking while I drove to the hospital. (I shake when I'm happy. And mad, for that matter...and nervous....I guess I'm just shaky overall, when feeling strong emotions!)

My parents were coming into town that day, but knew that I would be gone for some unknown amount of time before trying to make it back home to see them before they left.

She looked so beautiful. Like unfair-beautiful. She weathered labor with grace and--can you believe this?--peace and quiet. She was absolutely incredible, and she reaffirmed for me the power of a woman's body and the miraculous nature of pregnancy and birth. I feel so lucky, so honored, to have witnessed her work to get her baby here! (I had to return home at the very-most climactic point, but I'm happy to say that Shay had incredible support through her wonderful family, and I was able to come back after the actual birth....alas.)

I met Rick and Shayanne through my husband; Rick used to play sports with Phill in high school, and Phill ran track with Rick's sister, Kelly. (Did you get all that?)

I have loved the Snodgress family from the very start. Shay may be quiet on the surface, but underneath lurks someone so fun, so happy, so good to her very core, that you can't possibly not love her.

Rick is the most gentle, devoted father, and an incredibly loving husband. Everything about him suggests goodness.

I did a session with them a couple years ago, and was so excited to do another this year--and more than happy to see Shay's beautiful belly! You can really see their love and joy in the photos; I know I've said it before, but oh, how I love my job....and oh, how I love my clients.

3 months later.....is anyone there? (there?...there?....there?...)

We wanted to do something special for Mary Ellen, the mother to these three beautiful people. We decided to shoot some photos in front of their childhood home, not too far away. When we got there--the most serendipitous of things--it was empty and the neighbor had a key. They procured permission from the owners and we were able to shoot photos INSIDE their childhood home....we dipped right into the past for this little gift, and then marched right into the future with the rest of the locations. Epic.

While up north for Nolan’s blessing, I was finally—FINALLY!—able to hold Charlotte and June, my dear friend Cara’s identical twin girls (and third and fourth child; she is one busy woman). They are over two months old, but still so tiny it was almost surreal to open the door and see Cara standing there with them in her arms. I got to hold one or both of them for a really long time, and still wanted more when I was done. In fact, by the time I reluctantly put them down, the daylight was gone, and it became a little tricky to squeeze in an impromptu mini shoot. But I did the best with what light we had, and I’m glad I did! I keep looking at their photos to tide me over, counting down the days until I get to hold them again!

I have some tender feelings for this little guy and his parents—Phill went to high school with his dad, and his mom is one of those people you just immediately fall in love with. She and I talked quietly about some of the more poignant parts of our childhood, and about new motherhood, and all the beautiful aspects of newborn children. It was almost reverent in the room, and I’m really happy that the photos seem to reflect that, as I now have a record of a sweet little window of time with Nolan and his mama.

I had such a blast with the Whitaker family! We tried out a couple of new locations that I had scouted out the day before, we laughed a lot, and we made plenty of goofy faces—myself included. I've known Kaysha and her kids since 2002. It started in Colorado, where we both lived on a military base. Then, as our lifestyles dictated, we both relocated. She came here, and I, well....after several moves in between, I somehow ended up here--in St. George--only a short distance from where Kaysha now lives. Funny how that happens, isn't it? Funny or not, it is my great luck, because Kaysha happens to be the mom of three very wonderful children. And even more lucky--I got to photograph them! What naturals in front of the camera. What personality, and what cool-collected-calm! Kaysha, thank you. Let's do dinner soon.

I am so excited to finally--FINALLY!--post these photos! This shoot was epic. Adventurous personalities, genius hairstyling skills, and gorgeous people (hairstylists, salon owners, and hair models alike) made my "job" SO easy. Not to mention, I got my very own haircut from the oh-so-talented Ashley (refer to the gorgeous redhead five photos down), and friends, my hair is not easy to cut. My niece Autumn melts me.

One of the wonderful things about being a photographer is that I can gift my family with photos--for only the cost of my time. (And it feels like no time at all when it's family!) This session with my sister, my brother-in-law, and my four nieces was SO much fun--it was just play time! With pictures! Very little sitting down and very few tears or tantrums. (The way a family session should ideally be)

I was a little intimidated when Huenu, a fellow photographer at church, asked me to do engagement portraits for her. But I needn't have worried! This couple is a photographer's dream. They were so great together, and completely comfortable in front of the camera. They were up for anything and so fun to photograph; they really made my job easy, even with the 100+ heat. The last of the bridal sessions was almost the most adventurous. Almost. I have to say--the dirt bike in session 2 is probably tops, but the road we had to take to get to this windmill was long, bumpy, muddy, rocky, and caused my van to make some interesting sounds. Somewhat concerning. But absolutely worth it! Wedding photos to come--now that was an adventure. Rain & hail at a campground and the silly photographer wore wedges and no coat. Just wait. :D

What an honor it was to satisfy my raging baby hunger by photographing this darling newborn, Lily! She was premature, and only 3 weeks when I photographed her--so unbelievably tiny, almost unreal. So beautiful, so sweet. This is a good reason why I'm so addicted to this photography stuff.

That's right! These are the first two sets of three different sessions (third-set photos on their way). That's what happens when your to-be is in the military and you have four children together. Busy, busy, busy! But it's worth the planning. Camille has been my friend for a few years now, and I've had the pleasure of being her "personal" photographer over those years--of course it doesn't hurt that she is a wonderful model!

We spotted "Gloria" (as we christened the awesome purple chair) on our way to the shooting location, posing pretty in someone's front yard for a sweet low price. "She" was an integral part of the shoot. Add to that the fact that Ciera was brilliant and so much fun to work with, and we had a wonderful time! So thank you, ladies. :)

It was so much fun to have Ciera's mother there, too!

Dad even joined us later on, and was kind enough to just accept Gloria as part of the family.

I love spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment sessions, but there are a few things I recommend to make your planned photo shoot go as well as possible:

1) Colorful, creative clothing that expresses who you are. I love photos with rich or interesting colors, and usually only suggest black or white for black and white photography, or more formal photos. I tend to steer away from the all-white-shirts photo, just because I enjoy a more colorful photo! It's still possible to make the look of a photo uniform, without having everyone in the same color. Having said that, if color does not express who you are, by all means, where something else!

2) The best location is the location of your choice! I really love to work outside and with natural light. I love when a client has scouted out a favorite spot for photos! I want your personality, your tastes, your preferences to be the finished product hanging on the wall, not just my artistic point of view. This is a collaborative effort! We can work together to find a place that suits you perfectly.

3) If you would like photos of your newborn, I strongly suggest having photos done within the first two weeks of birth, and ideally the first week. Not only do they change so much in those first couple of weeks--couple of days, even--but they're easiest to work with at this time. I prefer to do newborn sessions at your home, where your newborn is safest and most comfortable, but most of all, I want to do whatever is ideal for you.

4) Expect 2-4 weeks for your photos to be edited and ready to be ordered. I will notify you by email or phone when your photos are ready. If when you receive your CD, you have questions, call me!
